Brilliant and brutal! The battle scenes are amongst the goriest I've ever seen in a war film. It has a very unique look and feel to it, taken from the graphic novel it's based on. The real life Spartans were amongst the greatest fighters ever known, and here the actors (especially Gerard Butler) really fit the caliber! Many real life Spartan phrases (like "fight in the shade") have been included in this film, and put to good, and often funny, use.

Pretty awesome movie! The special effects make it look fake, at times, rather then historical.
Also I am not a fan of how the movie forgot the other heroes in history. For instance it was not really 300 men that held but 300 spartans and a thousand greeks to aid.
As well as a naval battle that if it was never fought - the 300 men would of been flanked from the side and this movie would of never been. It was a great movie worthy of five stars, until they left out about 2000 other men that was deserving of the spartan hold at Thermopylae. But nonetheless it is still a tribute worth viewing and was a great movie despite the few flaws. -

MCT:August 23, 2008WTF! This movie was right up my alley and it was stupid! Greek mythology and odd filming... and it was crap! There was no story, just we're going to war but not really and then they battle for an hour and a half and use it as an excuse for weird angles, slo-mo, and other filming techniques that make a scene seem bad ass. They go home every now and then were babel occurs and not much else- I don't know some sort of effort to make drama and then more fighting and dialogue and narration that explains that the Spartains were great, the Spartains were mighty and the Spartians were great and mighty. After the first half hour I was bored out of my mind and fell asleep and didn't care what I missed. Just more action scenes really! The visuals wern't overly good, the wheat fields looked real and glorious but the sea looked too fake- whiched seemed to be the theme, it was either amazing or fake. As well when you pick music, try, TRY to go with a similar strain of sound! The soundtrack went from airy, breathy elf girl singing to punk rock to an orcastra's battle song! PICK SOMETHING ABD STICK WITH IT! And the ending was so lame! What was the point? I don't know, but I want my time back!

If you wan't an accurate Graphic Novel - To - Film adaptation, this is the best ever made, and that INCLUDES Sin City. Ignore the slagging it got, it was undeserved.

This is going to sound silly, butI didn't think the Spartans were tough enough. They were too caring towards each other. I can't believe they cut out the part in the graphic novel where the soldier falls and they beat the crap out of him. Where did all the intensity go? And I find it funny that they talked about the phalanx a lot, but barely did it they were off fighting induvidually which makes their actual style of fighting useless. And where were the spears? And what was up with the whole bit about the queen? She should never have been written into the script it was just annoying and stupid. Not too mention all the slow motion scences got annoying. This director even managed to make the wolf scence wussy and too emotional. I was very very dissapointed I was expecting something like Sin City and ended up with just another pointless action movie. seeing it once was way enough.

MCT:August 18, 2008so some of the effects really did annoy me and the whole persian army leader freeked me out. alot of needless nakedness of girls to make up for the fact that half naked men where running around.
seemed a bit OTT.
the fighting was good but like alot of movies these days - the story gets lost in the action. it's hard to compromise. -

It is spring, 480 BC Persian King Xerxes, continuing his fathers, Darius, master plan to conquer the Hellenic city-states, arrives in Hellas. The previous Persian invasion and diplomatic attempts have already turned most northern Hellas tribes and states to the Persian side. But the people of Athens and Sparta, the largest Hellenic powers at the time, feel quite insulted by the Persian emissaries requesting their surrender to Xerxes and slay them. In Sparta, King Leonidas consults the local oracle, which gives two options: either a spartan king will have to be sacrificed or Sparta will be burned to the ground. A year earlier (481, BC) a panhellenic consortium of all southern city-states have already recognized the superiority of the spartan army (the best organized and trained army at the time) and have announced King Leonidas supreme commander of the combined Hellenic army. It is then decided that a small force should block Xerxes' way to southern Hellas in the Thermopylae passage.This passage was at that time 12 meters wide.The great historian Herodotus, possibly exaggerating, states that there were 1700000 Persians(their true number could be anywhere around 100000 and 1000000) against 7000 Hellenic hoplites and slaves, including the 300 men of the spartan king elite guard. King Xerxes waited for 4 days for the Hellenes to be frightened and eventually surrender and was quite astonished by his opponents complete apathy who were following their daily program practicing and making their hair! After that Xerxes tried to convince Leonidas to drop weapons, give up his position, kneel before him and live on as a local governor under Xerxes. King Leonidas replied "molon lave", which means "Come and get them". Then the 3 days battle begun with the 300 Spartans, and 700 thespians (the other Hellenes where sent by Leonidas to protect passages to their flanks) slaying thousands of Persians with minimal losses. The whole Persian campaign would have fail if there wasn't Efialtes who showed Xerxes a secret passage to the Hellenic flanks. After a final battle lead by king Xerxes himself the Hellenic force was completely slain and their heroism and glory was written forever in history. From the beginning of the battle the Hellenes buried their dead in the spot they fell dead. After the battle signs where made for the dead of each Hellenic faction. For the pelloponisians generally (including the 300 Spartans) the sign reads(free translation) 'In this place 4000 thousand pelloponisians fought 30 millions), for the 300 Spartans(lakaedaemonians) especially the sign reads(free translation) 'Oh foreigner tell the lakaedaemonians that we are buried here obeying their laws' meaning that they never hesitated and never retreated from the enemy. The impact of the battle was enormous for both sides. The Persians' morale dropped to zero and the Hellenes lost their fear for the Persian conqueror and organized their defense. After several successful battles the Hellenes ultimately defeated the Persian army and repelled their invasion in the Battle of plataea in 479 BC.

Brothers and sisters, lend me your eyes so I many share with you all the tale of brave Leonidas I, King of Sparta, son of King Anaxandridas II, descendant of Heracles, who led 300 Spartan warriors against the seemingly unending forces of Emperor Xerxes of Persia at The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC.
Xerxes sent forth messengers to all Greek city-states offering gifts in exchange for their surrender and allegiance. Leonidas did not take the insult kindly and in a breach of protocol killed the messengers. In accordance with Spartan law, he sought permission from the keepers of the oracle to go to war. He was denied, which he knew spelt disaster for his people. Although unable to rally the Spartan army, he skirted the law by gathering 300 warriors for a walk that coincidentally set out towards the mountain pass known as The Hot Gates, which is the only way Xerxes? army could approach Sparta. While Leonidas is away and the battle rages on, Queen Gorgo works to convince the Spartan Council that the army needs to be discharged.
300, is an adaptation of the graphic novel written and drawn by Frank Miller with colors by Lynn Varley. Miller was inspired to chronicle this historical event after he saw the film The 300 Spartans as a young boy. From his vision, co-writer/director Zack Snyder has created a magnificent ballet of violence and bloodshed that is truly exquisite to behold. It?s not a glorification, but rather a hyper-realistic representation of a necessary evil that good men are forced to practice to live free. Not since the films of Sam Peckinpah has killing looked so good on the big screen.
Leonidas, played valiantly by Gerard Butler, is a proud King whose men worship him. He leads from the front, at the point of attack, unlike many leaders and rulers ever since who have hurled commands from the safety of being out of range. Leonidas? military decisions have an immediate impact on him as well as those who serve alongside, allowing him to fully understand the price to be paid, and a mutual respect to flourish. During one battle, an injured soldier tells Leonidas it was an honor to die serving him. Leonidas informs the soldier it was an honor living beside him.
The film is filled with CGI throughout, recreating Miller?s drawings and Varley?s color palette and making possible all the stabbing, slicing, and blood squirting of the battle scenes. While obvious at times, especially the latter effect, the pace and artistry of the activity on the screen keeps the viewer engaged.
As brilliant as all the effects work is, the story and performances are what lift the film into rarefied air. A special kudos goes out to the actors? training staff because the Spartans are extremely fit and every muscle is on display. The film is also augmented by the music of Tyler Bates, a fantastic mix that combines classical and metal elements, and includes the vocal work of Azam Ali.
The villain Xerxes is the film?s one flaw. All his dialogue is dubbed poorly, taking the viewer out of the moment and removing the menace his character should have created. The scene when he is alone with Leonidas the effects don?t work well. He looks where Leonidas is supposed to be and not at him.
The bar for sword-and-sandal epics has been set so high not even Icarus would attempt to reach it. Run with the speed of Hermes, and see 300 on the biggest screen with the best sound system available to better engulf your senses in its brilliance. I?m ready to relive it and rare is the film that compels me to see it again on the big screen. -

My brother watched this movie before I did. He always told me that it was one of the best movies that he has ever seen. I doubted it until I saw it at my uncle's house. It is the most amazinf movie ever. The graphics are awesome. Spartans rock and they never surrender. The fight to the end.

The movie ended with me wanting to see more of it, so it really captured my taste. How so? The visuals were way awesome, and the fight scenes was just the right kind of action that suited my hankering for blood and gore. The cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful, what a great masterpiece! The visuals and soundtrack music used was sewn so carefully and neatly along with the powerful delivery of such dramatic and oh so catchy lines, the actors were just as spectatular and brilliant as the CGI.
This was awesome to the awesomeness of the most awesome degree! MWAH! FABULOSO! MAGNIFICO!
*Insert: Eeeeee! David Wenham!! ^_^ !!! I love him! lol!

This is a great movie! How tough were they, 300 against 300,000 and at the end of the battle, the 300 were dead, but 42,000 Persians were dead; I think they did their part! Kick-ass movie!!! Loved it!!!

It sure is historically inaccurate... but if you want a movie historically accurate, you must watch History Channel, and avoid the movie theaters!!
