Plot: A revolutionary medical technique allows an undercover agent to take the physical appearance of a major criminal and infiltrate his organization.
The idea.. totally ridiculous
But when you have John Travolta and Nicholas Cage and they both are magnificant with some great action scenes, it kind of makes up for it..
omg this movie is insane, the action scenes are ridiculous, and the ending boat chase scene is unreal. Kudos to John Woo you have always left me excited after your movies, but this is your best by far
I watched this movie again a few days ago, and I simply loved it. Okay, so maybe I'm older and more attuned to the things needed to make a good movie, and THIS certainly carried all of the things needed for a good gunfest. But it did more than that; it showcased the talents of Travolta and Cage, as they were both tasked to play a really cunning and out-of-this world terrorist, Castor Troy.
In my case, this movie wasn't a rip/off.
I thought this film was awesome it is clever how both actors had to change characters and personalities, it was really clever, but as usual I loved it
"Weeeeeelllllll... ... WHAT a Pre-DIC-a-MENT."
It's alwasy so hard for me to describe this movie; not just on Flixster, but when recommending it to friends/strangers. Especially since I'm one of those people who likes to give the one sentence pitch to people (e.g., "It'll change your life."). I always struggle to find the right words and usually say something as vague as: "It's a really cool, action movie." or "Best John Woo movie I've seen." So, on top of that, I'll just add that it's a very well executed film. The right actors with the right story and the right director help create a wonderful visual narrative backed up by some pretty damn good scoring. It can also be fairly humorous at times due to the overwhelming amount of action and drama, but that only adds to the emotional adrenaline.
"It's like looking in a mirror. Only... not."
Castor Troy: When all else fails - fresh tactics!
A high concept, action movie plot elevated by John Woo's direction and it's main players.
The story surrounds an FBI agent Sean Archer, played by John Travolta and a terrorist Castor Troy, played by Nicolas Cage. Troy has previously murdered Archer's son, causing a devotion from Archer to catching him.
Upon finally catching Troy and putting him into a coma, a discovery is learned that a bomb has been secretly placed in LA, and the only way to find out how to stop it, is through Castor Troy's brother, Pollux. This involves the latest in plastic surgery. Meaning that Archer will have his face replaced with Troy's and go to prison to try and find out info from Pollux.
Problems arise when Castor awakens from his coma, steals Archer's own face, and burns all evidence of the situation.
Castor Troy: It's like looking in a mirror. Only... not.
As over-the-top as this sci-fi twist for the plot may seem, it provides for not only a great action film, but for a good character movie as well.
Travolta and Cage both pull double duty by playing their own characters, and then switching to play one another. They slip into finding the little ticks that make these actors.
Pollux Troy: Seeing that face on you makes me afraid my tiramisu might come back up.
Castor Troy: Well, think about me. This nose. This hair. This ridiculous chin.
It works great for the story. Watching Travolta as Cage, do everything thing he can to destroy his enemies life, while Cage as Travolta is stuck in impossible situations makes for a great double-revenge film.
It also helps that John Woo does his best work in an American film yet. The action scenes are great, complete with signature Woo moments including double pistols, doves, and of course slo-mo. This movie is 2 hours and 20 minutes, but its paced so well that I never really notice.
Complete with solid direction, fun from the leads, a good score, some good supporting players, and neat ways to keep the premise interesting, this is one of the best action movies of the 90s.
Castor Troy: I don't know what I hate wearing worse: your face or your body. I mean I certainly do enjoy boning your wife, but let's face it, we both like it better the other way, yes? So why don't we trade back.
Sean Archer: You can't give back what you've taken from me.
Castor Troy: OK, plan B. Assist kill each other.
A ridiculous story, Travolta and Cage overact and the result is.............one absolutely fantastic action flick. Watch on a big screen with the volume turned up, sit back and enjoy.
This was one of the most suspenseful and gripping movies not to mention Cage and Travolta are magnificent
One of my favorite action movies! My favorite directed by John Woo. This is a must for any action film fan. Travolta and Cage are outstanding in this. Great story mixed with the action.
Even though we could never scientifically accomplish what's done in this movie for at least another 20 years, it was a great premise.
A cheesy movie about face-switching bad guy and good guy, trying to stop each other before one can do something bad. Yawn.
Action packed and it's awesom u see the good guy and the bad guy and both actors do a great job for both
OMG! It's really amazing I like it and I wish to watch it everyday ,Because really it's interesting.
One of my all time favourite action movies. It sure would have been fun if they had Stallone and Arnold in this movie as they were thinking in the beginning. But Travolta and Cage is just as good to!
Very unbelievable science but if you ignore that it's not a bad action flic as far as they go.
More great work from Cage and Travolta.
This movie has a very interesting plot, with adequate twists that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
I have to say that both Travolta and Cage pulled off an amazing performance, especially when they had to totally submerge themselve's in each other's role. Sort of like have the other's personality. Great work there.
Oh! By the way, the action wasn't missing either! From the airport to the church. wow!
It ain't bad at all. Just may be a bit too long. Nice idea having both actors playing good & bad guys. So eventhough Travolta is the good guy at the start, his "face" is bad most of the movie.
I love, love , love these two actors; and together they're just dynamite!!!
True, the premise is a little over the top, but not impossible. (Modern science can do a lot of things that we should never seriously consider doing.)
The movie does a very good job of putting you in the detective's shoes and making you feel his horror when he realizes that he's lost his family and all social contacts, and his entire identy and life as he knew it. But what's so much worse is that his life long enemy is now accepted by his family as the patriarch! His enemy is making love to his wife and giving a convict's version of 'the talk' to his teenaged daughter!!!
Oh, and for those of you who only think of John Travolta as some Italian goof who makes fluff movies, let me tell you he was BORN to play villains! He really brings across evil very well. (I would also recommend seeing his villain performance in "The Punisher" with Thomas Jane.)
Just fantastic stuff!
Possibly John Woo's greatest American film yet. Watching it brings out my emotions from start to finish and the action scenes were done with the style of a master director known as John Woo. Even though he has made some movies that are not that impressive, it seems that he uses the style of A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2, the emotions of The Killer and the action of Hard Boiled, and incorporates all of this to make one awesome blockbuster featuring top actors such as John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. These two actors make the movie work and if Woo used different actors it would not have worked. Travolta and Cage changing roles from good to bad and bad to good is superb as both actors change their emotions as the characters change their identities. A must see for all John Woo and action fans and definitely the movie to have as a collectors item. John Woo's American Masterpiece is worth every dollar you spend on it.
Decent original actionfilm with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage both showing their versatility as actors within the same movie. (first good guy, then bad guy and vice versa)
Great film, as i expected it to be. Travolta was great as the villain, he made me laugh so much. Nic Cage seemed a little too subdued
It's a great movie. I always watch it with pleasure. In the end a man decides to bring up a boy of his son's murderer. Indeed, it's really very serious and interesting movie. WATCH IT!
When it comes to 90's action movies, no one did them better than director John Woo, and "Face/Off" is further proof of it. John Travolta stars as FBI special agent Sean Archer who has to go undercover as his arch enemy Caster Troy (Nicolas Cage) to find out where a bomb is being hidden. But this is not ordinary undercover mission, cause in this mission Sean must 'barrow' the actual face and body of Caster Troy. There is never a dull moment and the solid cast and good plot make this action flick well worth seeing.
An excellent movie. I didn't think that I would like it as much as I did, before I actually watched it. Lots of great action and twists involved. Cage and Travolta are truly great in this film.
Exceptional action flick with two outstanding performances from Cage & Travolota, Full review coming soon!
