Is It All Over for De Niro and Pacino?

Is It All Over for De Niro and Pacino?

You may recall the mild controversy a few months back when Francis Ford Coppola inadvertently berated former colleagues Al Pacino and Robert De Niro for selling out, or selling short, or whatever. "They all live off the fat of the land," he said, then later retracted the statement when the magazine hit stands. The Los Angeles Times critic Patrick Goldstein has written a piece that tackles Coppola's remark in light of recent events. Goldstein says he initially thought Coppola "was being cranky," but now, with the universal revulsion expressed at the release of Pacino's 88 Minutes as De Niro's What Just Happened? remains without a distributor, Goldstein concludes that Coppola "was right on the money."

First things first: What Just Happened? doesn't deserve the hideous trainwreck slot that 88 Minutes has been alloted. It's simply not that bad. De Niro puts on a nuanced, frequently amusing performance as a frustrated Hollywood producer incapable of keeping his professional and personal lives in check. He still has the uncanny ability to melt into his roles; even Analyze This, where he clearly mocked his own persona, allowed the actor to bring a certain degree of emotional fragility to the performance. Pacino is a different story.

pacino and deniro both haven't put out the same quality of acting that made them famous in the first place. i have yet to be entertained by either in any of their recent movies. i find them making the same performance over and over again in different movies. it's almost as if they're afraid to try something different in their acting. i will always regaurd them as great actors for the work they Have done in the past, but seeing them in a movie coming up doesn't make me want to see it anymore than if they weren't in it.

it is hard to decide whos da better actor of the two. its simply because both of them excel at wat they do...acting. i mean how can u decide whos better when u r comparin arguably the 2 best actors in the world??? n the reason y they r gr8 is they both no their strengths n use it effectively and they know wat they can n cant do...

Ok now besides wondering if that guy was nuts ot what, there's absolutely nothing bad to ever say about DeNiro or Pacino what so ever. And even the best are allowed to put out a "so so" movie and that's how they test themselves to see where their limits are. DeNiro has played either a gangster or an over protective father or a psychotic man for so long that he needs a sub par flick to rest a little. I'd love to see him play a lawyer just once and not even a corrupt layer, well not at the start. But 88 minutes is an interesting
flick and I give it 4 stars.

And also check out Dog Day Afternoon and Scent of a Woman(in which he plays an unusual character).

As for you people who say Pacino is not versatile and can only play loud mouth type characters simply need to watch more movies. Pacino's performance in Donnie Brasco for instance is exceptional and is not his typical high energy, high intensity character that he has often played. To see even a softer side to Pacino's ability check out Frankie & Johnny.

Coppola was a producer on De Niro's The Good Shepherd less than 2 years ago. The media is probably making way more of this than it truly merrits. This story even states "the universal revulsion expressed at Pacino's 88 mintues. True it has been dumped on a lot by the critics but Pacino's performance has been aplauded by many as well. As for theatre goers, 88 Minutes is not being called a classic by many but it's reviews and average ratings on all the online sites is really not bad. It's rated 3 and a half on here.
Besides, what has Coppola done recently? Jeepers Creepers part 2. Give me a break!! As if that's not living off the fat of the land. I don't exactly see De Niro or Pacino doing low buget horror sequels. Someone like Coppola who hasn't directed a good film in over 10 years doesn't really matter anymore anyway. Pacino and De Niro are still great actors and have shown it in recent years. Is Coppola still a great film maker? That however has not been shown in a long time.

De Niro is a world class actor. He has range and versatility. He does action, crime, drama, comedy, thriller and horror. Too bad you can't say that about Pacino.

What he said. De Niro is good, but not nearly as good as Pacino. In a few years, De Niro will probably retire....But no Pacino, he'll keep doing films until he dies.
